The Power of Journaling: How Writing Changes Lives
By Beyond Breakfast Foundation · March 19, 2026
Journaling is one of our six program pillars for a reason. When young people put pen to paper, they process emotions, set goals, and discover their own voice in ways that conversation alone can't achieve.
At the Beyond Breakfast Foundation, every weekly session includes a guided journaling component. It's not just writing — it's a practice of self-reflection that builds emotional intelligence and resilience.
Our mentees receive custom journal prompts each week that connect to the discussion topic. Some weeks it's about gratitude. Other weeks, it's about confronting fears or planning for the future.
One mentee shared: "I didn't think writing could help me. But now I look forward to it every week. It's like talking to myself, but I actually listen."
The journals stay private unless a mentee chooses to share. This creates a safe space for honesty — something many young people rarely experience.
