From Service Projects to Civic Identity

Community service isn't just about giving back. For our mentees, it's about discovering that they have something valuable to offer — and that their community needs their leadership.
Every quarter, Beyond Breakfast mentees participate in a team-based community service project. But we don't just show up to serve — we show up to reflect.
After every service event, we hold a Reflection Circle where mentees discuss what they experienced, what they learned, and how it connects to their own journey. This transforms community service from a task into a lens for self-discovery.
One parent told us: "My son came home from the cleanup day and said, 'Mom, people need us. I didn't know that before.'" That's the shift we're building — from "the world doesn't care about me" to "the world needs what I have to give."
